Want to know what happened in science in 2011? This re-cap is not only informative, it's beautiful.

2011 -- A Whirlwind Year of Papers Published, Ankles Broken, and SkyMiles Earned

"...but please tell me what there's to complain about?" TL:DR!? JUMP TO THE END!

This is my last post at ihearttheroad.com in its present form. Things are going to look a bit different here in the new year. When I started ihearttheroad.com to chronicle my pre-wedding road-trip in 2009, I intended to use the site only as a travel blog, but it has grown to include a smattering of my ramblings on various topics--travel, science, food, music.

With those themes in mind, this is 2011:

The Chemist Who Hardly Was and the Chemical Reaction that Actually Wasn't

After much prodding by a new G+ acquaintance, I copied all my posts from a night of raucous science-ing here so that they may be read all together. To get you in the mood, first have a look at this xkcd I stumbled upon, Science Montage. This is one of those times where it's funny (read: sad) 'cuz it's true.

Here you have it -->

Rags to Science

When I was a senior in high school, I decided to drop AP Calculus. I had taken the prerequisite first semester, pre-calculus, but by January, I'd had enough. I wanted to study advertising in college, and well, when was I ever going to need calculus? I enjoyed spending afternoons in the library creating the school website, working on long-term art projects or designing ads for the yearbook; I had no interest in limits or derivatives.

How I Invented the Purse

Once upon a time, in a village not so far from Chicago, I found myself dependent on crutches nursing a broken ankle. As it so happened, I discovered that I needed to carry lots of small things, but I could no longer manage.

The problem started with a wristlet to carry my student ID and money, and then chapstick, and then an iPhone that wouldn't fit inside the wristlet, and then a pale pink Moleskine notebook.

Remember when you were my age? If you wanted a paper, you'd schlep to the library to find it. You'd anticipate a new journal issue the way I anticipate a new episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians (that's a joke, sort of). You'd spend hours tracking down and formatting reference information. What you wouldn't do is sit at your desk, stare into the glossy-screened box in front of you, and wait for the information to come to you.

Snow, Snow, Go Away!

It's been snowing all day. I walked uphill both ways for miles and miles in a blizzard to go to lunch slightly off campus. That probably explains why I'm too tired to write tonight.

Peace.

Twitterpated...

I got 100 followers today! I mean, I don't want to brag or anything, but I actually got 102. Woot!

This really could have just been a tweet, but I need to post something in order to keep myself writing here. And really, at this point, it's way too long to be a tweet...so, you know, deal.
