The Illegitimate Sons
Holy sh*t, I saw good music in South Bend/Mishawaka last night at a house party. I can't help but miss Nashville after a show like that.
The Illegitimate Sons hail from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and three members of the band (Lee on vocals/guitar, Ben on mandolin/guitar and Kyle on slide guitar/guitar) played 2.5ish hour set last night at a friend's house. Frontman Lee reminds me of somebody I can't quite place, maybe a cross between a young, dark-haired-and-solid Johnny Cash and Augustana's channeling-Bob-Dylan Dan Layus?
The Illegitimate Sons play a mix of raw classic country meets rock and gospel that lands them solidly in the realm of Americana. They mixed tracks from their upcoming album, American Music, with sure bets from Hank Williams, Neil Young, The Band and Townes Van Zandt.
If all goes well, those of you lucky enough to attend my world famous Southern Party (year 5, y'all!) will get the chance to hear these guys while also eating BBQ and swigging sweet tea in early September.
I don't have all the song titles, but the set-list went something like this:
Harlem River Blues (Justin Townes Earl)
Bleed It Dry
Where You'll Hide From My Blooded Eye
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams)
Injured Bird (Michael Stipe/Vic Chesnutt)
Heart of Gold (Neil Young)
Atlantic City (Bruce Springsteen)
The Weight (The Band)
You'll Never Break This Cold Heart of Mine
[Full Band Break]
Kyle Morris sang a few of his own songs:
Sad Like a Sunken Ship
[Full Band Resume]
I Want To Die Like Blaze Foley
No You're Not, You're Disloyal
Wagon Wheel (Old Crow Medicine Show)*
If I Needed You (Townes Van Zandt)
I Saw The Light (Hank Williams)
Diamonds in the Rough [Encore]
*My favorite of the night.
